Environmental Improvement Works
This public realm scheme rejuvenated an important pedestrian link between the main shopping centres in the city. Newmarket Street has one of the highest footfalls in Derry as it links Foyleside Shopping Centre to the Richmond Shopping Centre and the Forum Theatre.
The works included renewing and diverting deep sewers and drains, constructing a new curved reinforced concrete retaining wall, cladding with Haddonstone stonework, creating a complex arrangement of curved feature steps in European red granite, and re-aligning the carriageway to give a more open and spacious pedestrian piazza. The scheme was enhanced with extensive feature up lighting and high mast contemporary lighting columns. The entrance to the Richmond Centre is now a bright and inviting space and the feature curved retaining wall has been decorated with a ceramic glazed public art piece.
