FP McCann were contracted by Magherafelt District Council to construct the new Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt. The £4.6m nineteen month contract included 5,300t of blacktop, 34,000t of aggregates imported, 5,000t of ready mixed concrete placed, 3,100t of sand, 700t of structural steelwork erected, 75,000t of export material, 9,500m of pipe lines laid, and 5,000m of kerbing laid.
The state of the art facility consists of a tensioned fabric Rubb Structure sports hall measuring 145m by 70m. The indoor arena was reputed to be the largest of its type in Europe at the time. The arena can be divided into various different combinations ranging from 1 to 7 separate areas and is suitable for multi disciplines. Included in the indoor arena is a synthetic surface with a 5 lane 300m indoor running track, 4 no. 5-a-side football pitches, 4 no. tennis courts and a full size soccer/hockey pitch. The facility benefits from an accommodation block and spectator viewing facilities.
The scheme included an outdoor track facility is one of the best in Ireland and is constructed to IAAF Standards. It is possible that it will accommodate an international team in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics. It has a 6 lane 400m running track and includes all field event facilities, and a sand based soccer and gaelic football pitch.
The facility is currently being well attended by a wide variety of schools, clubs and the general public.
