The world famous Silverstone motor racing circuit and its spectator viewing facilities is undergoing a major facelift. Once completed in March 2010 the circuit will host the MotoGp and World Superbike Championships.
More recently it has been announced that the track will also be hosting the 2010 Santander British Grand Prix with the Formula 1 deal signed for the next 17 years. The new Arena complex has been designed to enhance and safely accommodate two and four wheel racing.
Part of the £25 million overall contract value involves a £5 million complete re-design and build of the racing circuit. As well as some 10,000 tonnes of tarmac and 8,000 metres of Armco safety barrier, 2,500 metres of FIA and FIM approved precast concrete kerbs have been specified. The kerbs are designed to provide a retaining edge to the track but are flush to the surface enabling safe run-over for racing cars and bikes.
FP McCann have supplied 800 FIM (Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme) kerbs to Buckingham Group Contracting. The 1000mm x 800mm units are chamfered to channel water away from the edge of the circuit to the soak away boundary. Kerb moulds were adapted at the Company’s Cadeby manufacturing plant in Warwickshire.
”FP McCann quickly responded to our request to initially provide 300 FIM kerb units. They supplied the kerbs within our timed delivery programme and to the quality requirements as set out within the FIM specification. We have since ordered a further 500 kerbs.”
