Jacking Pipes used in Morfa Retail Park Culvert Diversion

FP McCann worked closely with the McBurney Group to overcome blockages on a culvert diversion beneath the Morfa Retail Park for client Miller Construction.  McBurney are specialists in civil engineering with a strong history of work in the retail and mining sectors.

Investigative works identified an area of damaged pipe with the 1.2m culvert consequently blocked with silt and rubble.  The preferred option to address the blockage was a pipe jacking solution, which is a means of tunnelling that is very low risk in terms of affecting the structural integrity of overlaying materials and also removes the necessity for expensive and disruptive excavation works along the length of the damaged storm drain.

FP McCann supplied DN1200mm Jacking Pipe’s to the Swansea site from its Alnwick facility in Northumberland.  The innovative pipe jacking operation involved using powerful hydraulic jacks to force FP McCann’s specially designed jacking pipes through the ground, while at the same time excavating from within the leading shield.

In this manner, the replacement was constructed watertight and structurally secure with reliable ground support.  All work was completed with minimal disruption to a very busy car park and surrounding businesses.
